About Middle Point Landfill
Middle Point Landfill has been a major component of middle Tennessee’s
infrastructure since 1989. Our facility provides a vital
service, managing almost one million cubic yards of solid waste
each year. Allied is able to do this at competitive rates
while still providing free services to Rutherford County and the
City of Murfreesboro. The Middle Point property is approximately
808 contiguous acres, 410 acres of which are zoned for landfill
use.
Our Financial Commitment
Allied Waste Services and Middle Point Landfill are an important
part of the economic engine of this area. Many people know
that Middle Point offers a direct financial benefit to middle Tennessee
but few are aware of the magnitude. From host fees and free
disposal, Allied provides a benefit of more than $2.1 million per
year to the area. Between our Nashville and Murfreesboro
operations, we employ over 250 middle Tennesseans.
Our Environmental Commitment
Protecting the environment is our highest priority. We work
closely with the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation
to assure that we meet or exceed all state and federal regulations. The
geology and hydrogeology at Middle Point have undergone extensive
evaluation to ensure its suitability for use as a solid waste management
facility. This high level of investigative effort in concert
with proven engineering design and construction practices will
guarantee the facility can be constructed and operated in a safe,
environmentally friendly manner.
Once trash is disposed in the landfill, it naturally decomposes;
a process that produces gases. On the Middle Point site we
operate 120 gas extraction wells which not only help greatly in
managing odors but which provide a natural, clean burning source
of fuel to generate electricity. This type of electricity
is called “Green Power” because it is created by an
alternative to the traditional forms of power generation and recycles
a byproduct of landfilled trash into a useful item for consumption. |
This electricity is provided for use in this marketplace and/or
is distributed wherever TVA deems appropriate, which ultimately helps
reduce residential and commercial gas bills. With increases
in energy prices the utilization of Green Power has never been more
important. You may be surprised to know that the energy value
of landfill gas extracted from Middle Point and used for electrical
generation every year is equivalent to about 30,000 barrels of crude
oil.
Our Good Neighbor Commitment
We’re proud to be a part of this community. Allied Waste
is happy to provide significant additional benefits such as hosting
community events and maintaining an expansive recreation area for
soccer, softball and a landing strip for model airplanes as well
space for a wide range of additional community activities. We
also are please to provide land that is home to the Walter Hill Volunteer
Fire Department.
We’re proud to live and work here – and just like our
friends and neighbors we will do our very best to assure that this
remains a great community for our children and grandchildren.
